Subjects & Curriculum

Cambridge International AS & A Levels offer about 55 subjects to choose from. Schools can mix and match these in many ways. This setup allows learners to either specialise deeply or explore a broad mix whatever suits their goals.

What the Broad Subject Groups Cover

  • Mathematics & Sciences
Subjects like Mathematics (including Further Mathematics), Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Marine Science, Environmental Management and Psychology.

  • Languages
Choices include English Language, Literature, Arabic, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Tamil, Urdu and more, some available only at A Level or AS Level.

  • Arts & Humanities
This group covers subjects like History, Economics, Business, Art and Design, Geography, Drama, Media Studies, Law, Classical Studies, and Accounting.

  • Interdisciplinary Subjects
These include Thinking Skills and English General Paper, which prepare students to analyse ideas from multiple perspectives. Learners often look for AS and A Levels tuitions in Dubai Silicon Oasis to help manage these interdisciplinary demands.

Most learners take four AS Level subjects in the first year. In the following year, they continue with three of those subjects into the A Level phase. This gives a balanced load, while allowing students to focus more deeply on their strongest or most relevant subjects.

What Skills Students Gain

The curriculum is designed to teach students:

  • Analyse and evaluate different sources

  • Apply knowledge to new situations

  • Create structured arguments in English

  • Work independently and manage projects

Subjects like Mathematics also focus on logical thinking, modeling & accurate reasoning. These skills are useful across all fields. Interdisciplinary subjects, like Global Perspectives & Research or Thinking Skills, foster broader research, reasoning & contextual thinking. Students even explore As and A levels tuitions in UAE as they engage with the analytical depth required in these courses.

How Assessment Works

Cambridge International AS & A Levels offer flexible assessment routes to suit different learning preferences:

  • AS Level only: Students take all AS assessments in a single exam series.

  • Staged Assessment: Students appear for AS Level exams first and then complete the remaining A Level components in a future series. (Note: Not all subjects, especially some languages, support the carry-forward of AS marks.)

  • Full A Level route: All exams are taken at the end of the two-year course in one go.

Exams are held twice annually in June and November, with results issued in August and January, respectively.

Grades are reported separately for each subject.

At A Level, grades range from A* (highest) to E (minimum required performance).

At AS Level, grades range from A to E (there is no A* grade.)

Some centres may also provide a Percentage Uniform Mark (PUM) to show a learner’s position within each grade band.

Why AS & A Levels Matter to Students

  • Academic depth– Students go deep rather than broad-brushing topics.

  • Real-world thinking– It’s about applying ideas, testing arguments, solving new problems.

  • Flexibility– Mix and match subjects to suit strengths and future plans.

  • University-ready– Top institutions globally including UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Singapore, all recognise A Level. In the US and Canada, strong grades can even earn early university credit.
